Food Sensitivities & Testing

Food Sensitivity Testing and IssuesIs your food making you sick?

About Food Sensitivity Tests

Are you suffering from a stubborn health problem that won’t go away no matter what you try?  If so you may want to consider doing an  MRT food sensitivity test and use the LEAP elimination diet to quickly reduce symptoms.   I use this testing for people that score high on a symptom survey with symptoms in many categories, especially if their blood test shows elevated C-Reactive Protein.   This informs me that food is likely contributing to a peripheral immunocyte response causing widespread symptoms.  Otherwise for common digestive issues (such as SIBO or IBS) I have excellent success with Chinese Medicine, acupuncture and herbs.

Potential Reasons For Food Sensitivities

Perhaps the medications and treatments you’re taking aren’t actually getting at the root cause of your illness- and you feel frustrated?  If you feel this way, or know someone that does, consider some important facts.

  • Medical research has shown that food sensitivities and food-chemicals can cause an inflammatory response that can lead to a wide array of painful symptoms and chronic health problems.
  • If foods and additives in your diet are involved in your illness, whatever medications you take will ultimately fail because they only mask the symptoms. They do not treat the underlying cause of the symptoms. And, as is too often the case, many medications have side effects that can lead to other health problems.
  • If food sensitivities are causing your illness and you do not properly address them, you could end up suffering for years and spending thousands of dollars for treatments that will never produce the relief you desire.

Conditions and Symptoms Often Associated with Food and Chemical Sensitivities:

Millions of Americans suffer from food sensitivities. Many other uncomfortable lingering health problems are often directly related to specific immune reactions to the foods we eat. Even so called “healthy” foods such as salmon, chicken, apples, spinach, blueberries, or garlic can provoke symptoms in some individuals.    For example one of my patients that has multiple sclerosis always feels worse when she eats blueberries!  So it can be anything – not just the evil processed foods.  Some named diseases often caused by food sensitivities:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Migraines, Cluster Headaches
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Celiac Disease
  • Chronic Diarrhea
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD, Acid Reflux Heartburn)
  • Autism, Asperger’s and other Spectrum Disorders
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Chronic Sinusitis
  • Problem Eczema
  • Weight Imbalances
  • Infertility / GYN Issues
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Brain Fog
  • Urticaria

The first thing a food sensitivity sufferer needs to do is identify their trigger foods and food-chemicals. In the past, this has been easier said than done for many reasons:

  • Food sensitivity reactions may be delayed by hours or even days after ingestion. Even if you suspect food sensitivities, it is not likely you would consider that the headache you have right now was caused by something you ate yesterday.
  • Food sensitivities are dose-dependent. This means a small amount or moderate amount of a reactive food may not cause any noticeable symptoms, but a larger amount may contribute to symptoms.   Also a small amount of a few low-reactive foods can trigger a symptom whereas one or two of those foods eaten together does not trigger a symptom.
  • Reactive foods vary widely from person to person, even if they have the same symptoms.
  • There are many reactive foods and food-chemicals.   Sometimes it can be a preservative or food coloring in one’s toothpaste that is contributing to symptoms such as migraines.

*”After the first week on the elimination diet what happened was truly a dramatic and quality of life changer for me. I found that my digestive issues became lessened, bloating diminished, and there were many fewer episodes of stool elimination. My bladder (which had been extremely problematic in the recent past) became much better (like a half an hour to an hour better on average) in holding urine and there has been no leakage. I had had problems with vaginal numbness prior to the diet for years and that has improved.

Mental clarity has been hugely improved; I forget much less often than I used to and have had only one episode of brain fog since the diet started.

Most importantly of all, perhaps, I have had a HUGE increase in energy levels. Prior to this diet, energy was causing me to curtail activities and I was routinely fatigued by 8 p.m. every night. That is not the case now! I can actually stay up at night the way I used to before the onset of the MS…The diet has been a marvelous addition to my life. It has not taken the MS away but it has made it immeasurably easier to live with.”L. – Milford, MA Diagnosed w/Multiple Sclerosis in 2001

Reducing Your Symptoms and Regaining Health

We will have an initial consult – either in office, or if you are at a distance via phone or Skype.   The cost of this initial 20 minute appointment is $30. If we decide that the best route for determining food sensitivities is for you to get MRT blood testing, then I will provide you with a kit for you to take to a lab for a blood draw. In about 10 days after the blood draw we’ll have the results and we will meet to make a dietary plan – your personalized LEAP anti-inflammatory diet.   .

I will help you create a health eating program based on your test results.   We can expect that within the first phase of the diet (7-14 days) you will have a significant reduction in your major symptoms (at least 70%).     The brilliance of this program is that you get to experience the effect food has on your well-being.   In the future after going through the dietary program you should be able to connect symptoms with some food you have eaten.   It will not only make you healthy, it will provide a lifelong education.
