All through the ages medicine has focused on digestion as a pillar to health:
- In Ayurvedic Medicine the presence of ama, the toxic byproduct of impaired digestion, is the cause of most treatable diseases. – ~2000 BC
- Hippocrates is attributed to the saying – “All disease begins in the gut” – ~400 BC
- Li Dongyuan the great Chinese Master Physician taught that the digestive functions must be harmonized to prolong life – ~1200 AD
- Functional Nutrition is centered around repairing the intestinal mucosa and correcting imbalances to aid in detoxification leading to health improvements – 2000 AD
Get to the Root of your Digestive Symptoms
If your digestion isn’t working well, nothing feels right.
More than 70% of the immune system resides in the gut. When digestion is impaired, it doesn’t just cause bloating or discomfort — it can ripple outward into fatigue, headaches, joint pain, skin issues, anxiety, depression, grouchy mood, and brain fog. Many people spend years chasing these symptoms without realizing the gut is at the center of it all.
If you’re struggling with digestive symptoms and feel like you’ve “tried everything,” this is exactly the kind of case I handle every day.
Digestive Systems I Treat Successfully
Using acupuncture, Chinese medicine, and personalized nutrition therapy, I regularly help patients with:
- SIBO, bloating, gas, and chronic indigestion
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS-C, IBS-D, IBS-Mixed)
- Acid reflux and heartburn
- Peptic and duodenal ulcers
- Gastroparesis
- Gallbladder dysfunction
- Hemmorhoids
- Digestive symptoms tied to autoimmune conditions

These aren’t “new” diseases — they’ve been documented in Chinese medical texts for nearly 2,000 years. What’s new is the modern lifestyle that drives them: stress, ultra-processed foods, disrupted sleep, medications, and nervous system overload.
The good news? These patterns are highly treatable when addressed properly.
Why Digestive Symptoms Persist
Most conventional approaches focus on managing symptoms — acid suppression, antibiotics, and restrictive diets — without correcting the underlying physiology that caused the problem.
My approach is different.
Rather than treating a diagnosis, I assess how your digestive and immune systems are functioning. We work together to restore homeostasis, improving their ability to process food, manage stress, and handle inflammation. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine regulate the nervous system, improve gut motility, reduce inflammation, and support proper digestive signaling—not just mask symptoms.
SIBO – A Symptom not a Cause
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is defined as an abnormally high number of coliform bacteria in the small intestine. It is associated with a broad range of predisposing small-intestinal motility disorders and with surgical procedures that result in bowel stasis. The most common symptoms of SIBO include diarrhea, flatulence, abdominal pain, and bloating.SIBO has become a popular diagnosis in recent years, but it’s rarely the underlying cause.
Often people are given antibiotics for SIBO and it works wonderfully. But then after 6-18 months the symptoms come back if correction has not been taken that caused the impared digestion in the first place.
In Chinese medicine, symptoms such as bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and irregular stools have been described for centuries. What we now label as “SIBO” often reflects a deeper imbalance in digestive function, circulation, and nervous system regulation.
When that physiology is corrected, the digestive system can often rebalance without repeated antibiotics or long-term restrictive diets.
My GI symptoms, including debilitating pain, are now gone. I feel healthier, happier, and can finally enjoy my life again.”
— Maia M., Boston
Gastroparesis: A Condition That Responds Exceptionally Well
Gastroparesis is a chronic disorder characterized by delayed gastric emptying without obstruction, often attributed to idiopathic causes. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, early satiety, bloating, and abdominal pain. The diagnosis is confirmed by a gastric emptying study (scintigraphy).
I frequently encounter gastroparesis, especially in people who feel stressed, as engaging the sympathetic nervous system reduces digestive function. There are no good biomedical approaches, and pharmaceutical options often carry significant side effects.
There are formulas dating back 1800 years for what we today call gastroparesis. Acupuncture, customized Chinese herbal medicine, and small, targeted dietary changes can dramatically improve symptoms by supporting gastric motility and nervous system regulation. There is no one-size-fits-all treatment — five people with gastroparesis can receive five different acupuncture treatments.
“After just four treatments, I was able to completely stop my medication. I sleep better, feel calmer, and finally have my life back.”
— Cindy B., Marlborough, MA
Autoimmune Digestive Conditions (Crohn’s & Colitis)
Autoimmune digestive conditions, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, are increasingly common and can be profoundly disruptive to daily life. Ongoing inflammation, stress, dietary triggers, and immune imbalance often drive symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and nutrient deficiencies.
Medications such as biologics and immunosuppressants are sometimes necessary — especially during active flares — and they play an important role in controlling severe inflammation. At the same time, medication alone doesn’t always address the underlying digestive and immune imbalance that led to symptoms in the first place.
My goal is to reduce dependency on the biological medications.
This is where acupuncture, Chinese medicine, and functional nutrition can help.
Once symptoms are stabilized — or earlier in the disease process — these therapies can support immune regulation, reduce gut inflammation, improve digestion, and strengthen the intestinal lining. The goal isn’t to “turn off” the immune system, as the medications do, but to help it function more appropriately and predictably.
I often work with gastroenterologists to help patients:
- Reduce the frequency and severity of flares
- Improve digestion, energy, and nutrient absorption
- Better tolerate medications
- Support longer periods of remission
