Bicarbonate Can Help with Athletic Performance

Potassium & Magnesium Bicarbonate: Benefits In Athletic Performance

A recent study showed that swimmers given sodium bicarbonate had better athletic performance over a control group. It is long been believed (and proven by coaches) that there is less lactic acid induced fatigue during exercise when a bicarbonate is used as a supplement. But bicarbonates aren’t only for athletes as many practitioners often give certain ‘acidic’ patients bicarbonates first thing in the morning or right before bed to help balance their internal milieu. It really does work wonders for my patients that need the added buffering, especially those on a higher protein diet or if there is any chance of kidney stones.

Benefits & Types: Sodium, Potassium & Magnesium Bicarbonate

How do you know if you may need a bicarbonate? You feel yucky. You feel heavy or weak muscles. You just don’t feel right. Then you may use a bicarbonate in the morning for a few days to see if things shift. (You do not want to take it around meals as it will impede digestion!). You can also use some at night. I wouldn’t use just baking soda because it has too much sodium. I much prefer a Potassium bicarbonate or magnesium bicarbonate, although the magnesium bicarbonate is difficult to come by and expensive. Products I would recommend are Klaire labs or by Body Bio. You can take in the morning and again before bed on an empty stomach.
