Omega 3 fatty acids have been in the news quite a bit over the past few years so I’m sure most people know that an adequate amount are necessary during pregnancy. However I’m always surprised when I suggest to women that are trying to get pregnant or are newly pregnant that they need to eat good sources of Omega-3 such as flax (best to use ground seeds rather than oil), walnuts, or brazil nuts. One of the best sources of Omega-3 are the fish oils which are very beneficial during pregnancy.
My partner Joy is pregnant and I’ve been giving her (as I give all my pregnant patients) a high DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid ) fish oil from Nordic Naturals.
Another study was released showing benefit of Omega-3 oils during pregnancy. In particular DHA which the body can make in small amounts, however it may not be sufficient for some people. DHA was shown to help with visual acuity, but there have been many studies showing its benefit for IQ, emotions, as well as reducing allergies. I haven’t seen any hard evidence as to a recommended amount, it is most likely individual dependent as are so many supplements. However eating a smart diet during pregnancy by consuming DHA eggs, fish, a variety of nuts and seeds as well as whole grains, beans and kindly raised animals should be the norm.
