I’m Dr. George Mandler, a Massachusetts-licensed acupuncturist and licensed dietitian/nutritionist with more than 20 years of clinical experience. I have been practicing since 2006 and have also taught nutrition at the New England School of Acupuncture since 2007.
My approach combines acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and nutrition when appropriate. Rather than treating every patient according to the same protocol, I look at your individual symptoms, health history, goals, and—when appropriate—laboratory findings to develop a treatment plan that fits you.
I see patients at my Belmont location in Cushing Square on Wednesdays. This gives patients in Belmont and surrounding communities an option for receiving acupuncture and integrative care closer to home.
Acupuncture is one part of a larger treatment approach. While acupuncture uses very fine, sterile, single-use needles at specific points on the body, the most important part is determining which points and treatment approach are appropriate for the individual patient.
Much of my acupuncture practice incorporates Korean Saam acupuncture, a style that uses a relatively small number of carefully selected points. I find this approach particularly useful because it allows treatment to be focused rather than relying on a large number of needles.
Your first visit may take up to an hour. We begin with a detailed health history and discuss your symptoms, concerns, and goals. When appropriate, treatment can begin during that first visit.
Treatment frequency depends on the individual and the condition being treated. Some patients initially benefit from more frequent visits, with appointments becoming less frequent as their condition improves. The goal is always to develop a treatment plan that makes sense for you rather than keeping you in treatment indefinitely.
Chinese medicine looks at patterns of health and symptoms rather than focusing only on a diagnostic label. Two people with the same diagnosis may have very different symptoms, health histories, and treatment needs.
When Chinese herbal medicine is appropriate, I prescribe individualized formulas rather than relying solely on standardized, off-the-shelf products. Your health history, symptoms, medications, and other relevant factors are considered when developing an herbal prescription.
I hold a doctorate in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine from Yosan University, as well as a master’s degree from the New England School of Acupuncture. My training allows me to integrate acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine when appropriate.
Herbs are not necessary for every patient. Some people do very well with acupuncture alone, and I will recommend herbs only when I believe they may provide additional value. When herbs are used, treatment is monitored and adjusted according to how you respond.
Nutrition is another important part of my approach. As a Massachusetts-licensed dietitian/nutritionist, I can incorporate nutritional assessment and dietary recommendations into an individualized treatment plan when appropriate.
There is no single diet that works for everyone. Your dietary recommendations should take into account your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, nutritional needs, and personal circumstances.
A nutrition visit includes a detailed dietary history and nutritional assessment. When appropriate, I may also review laboratory testing or recommend additional testing. Chinese medicine diagnostic principles can also be incorporated when they are relevant to your care.
For patients whose symptoms suggest that food sensitivities may be contributing to their problems, I use MRT testing and the LEAP elimination diet when appropriate.
I work with patients experiencing a wide range of ongoing health concerns, including digestive problems such as IBS, bloating, reflux, SIBO, and constipation. I also have a particular interest in fertility and reproductive health, women’s health, chronic pain, and inflammatory conditions.
My fertility practice includes support for both women and men, and I am a Fellow of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine (FABORM).
Patients also seek care for concerns such as painful or irregular periods, heavy menstrual bleeding, menopause-related symptoms, chronic pain, and other long-standing health issues.
The appropriate treatment depends on the individual. Acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, nutrition, or a combination of these approaches may be appropriate depending on your circumstances.
When someone has been dealing with a health problem for months or years, there is often more to consider than the symptom itself. Digestive function, nutrition, sleep, stress, hormonal changes, inflammation, lifestyle, and other factors may all be relevant depending on the person.
My goal is to understand the bigger picture rather than simply apply the same treatment to everyone with the same diagnosis.
If acupuncture is appropriate, we use it. If nutrition is an important part of the picture, we address it. If Chinese herbal medicine may be helpful, we can consider it. And if a particular approach does not appear necessary, I won’t recommend it simply because it is available.
The goal is a treatment plan that is understandable, individualized, and appropriate for your needs.
I see patients at my Belmont location on Wednesdays until 4pm. The office is located at OM NamoCenter, 93 Trapelo Road in Cushing Square, Belmont, MA 02478.
The first visit may take up to an hour. We begin with a detailed health history and discussion of your concerns and goals, and treatment can begin during the same visit when appropriate.
Most people experience little discomfort from acupuncture. You may feel a brief sensation when a needle is inserted, which generally passes quickly. Very fine needles are used, and treatment is adjusted to your comfort level.
This depends on your condition, how long you have experienced it, and how you respond to treatment. Some patients begin with more frequent visits and gradually space them out as they improve. We will discuss an appropriate treatment schedule based on your individual situation.
Saam acupuncture is a Korean acupuncture system that uses a relatively small number of carefully selected acupuncture points. It is one of the approaches I incorporate into my practice.
No. Chinese herbs are not necessary for every patient. Some people respond well to acupuncture alone. If I believe herbal medicine could be helpful, we can discuss whether it is appropriate for you.
A nutrition visit begins with a detailed dietary history and nutritional assessment. When appropriate, I may review laboratory testing and incorporate Chinese medicine diagnostic principles into the assessment. Recommendations may include dietary changes and, when appropriate, supplements or other lifestyle changes.
MRT is a laboratory test used to identify foods that may be associated with an individual’s symptoms. LEAP is an elimination-diet approach that uses the MRT results to guide dietary changes. I use this approach selectively when a patient’s symptoms and history suggest that food sensitivities may be relevant.
Insurance coverage varies by plan. I accept most acupuncture insurance plans, with some exceptions, and many BCBS and Harvard Pilgrim/HPHC plans provide coverage for nutrition visits. Some plans require a referral.
Because benefits vary, I recommend checking with your insurance company before your appointment to confirm your specific coverage.
If you are looking for acupuncture, Chinese medicine, or individualized nutrition support in Belmont, I am available for appointments at my Belmont location on Wednesdays.
